The Art, It's Hungry...

6/15/10

Don’t feed the art, because it may bite... This show coming up at artdc Gallery encompasses a wide range of techniques that are powered by motors and the viewer, creating motion ranging from random physical movements to very defined circles. It's wind-powered. It's moving disembodied faces. It's a bunch of parts that "crank, buzz, flap, blink and jitter," notes gallery director Jesse Cohen.

How can you resist moving disembodied faces?

Jesse adds, "In a room overflowing with tweaker-like energy, Sarah Martin’s paintings jump out and grab your attention with calming power."

Thinkin' Big & Congrats & More Lust

I got a commission to do a mural at my kiddo's orthodontist office. The wall is huge and I'm really excited. It also got me thinking about what I would do if I had no limits... on time, money, space and most importantly courage. There are some current opps floating around for installation proposals so I'm thinkin' I just might submit. Maybe something like 100 Words of Solitude. A hundred painted plexi panel spread out/clustered that depict words that invoke the feeling of being alone. We'll see...

Congrats to the man for getting into the Laurel Art Guild annual juried show. Way to go, Stephen! Also congrats to fellow artdc.org member Erin Antognoli and Studio Gallery member Jacqui Crocetta :)

Lust... is a new exhibit that will span multiple galleries and showcase works that depict many interpretations of love and lust. The opening reception is Sunday, February 14th, 2010 from 1pm-5pm. This will be an incredible Valentine's Day event for couples, friends, and patrons!

HYATTSVILLE, MD (01-29-10) – artdc Gallery, Design Studio Art Gallery, and Cheryl Edwards Studio will host this exhibit. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2010 from 1-5pm. The exhibit will run from February 8th – March 3rd 2010.

In collaboration with multiple Arts District galleries, we will work to create a movement in celebration of that wonderful time full of love. You know the day--February 14th! V-day. We will be developing a semi-all inclusive show that will be curated in one space, and then split between galleries. This movement goes beyond space limitations and activates the neighborhood through multiple gallery collaborations.

There's an energy which drives us to fall in love. Philosophers, scientists, and artists study it. Lust is an intense craving for one’s lover and has been a tremendous force in the creation of art and spirit. Lust is joyful and painful at the same time. We are exploring lustful creativity with a tremendous, ground-breaking show which crosses individual gallery barriers. As a group, each gallery director will assist in curating the show. We will then divide the work between our spaces. Lust will create a movement for the month of February!

The art will range from publicly accessible art PG-13 to much spicier concepts! This is not an erotic art show. We need to explore this unstoppable whirlwind of fear, need, anxiety, love, and desire. Lust and love move deeper than sex, it's power.

Exposed Opening

2/8/10

It was a full house at Mayer Fine Art. The show was great, really strong, and I was very happy to be a part of it. The gallery space was wonderful -- totally surrounded by windows and art on angled structures for good views of just about everything. Someone I know from way back was there -- she's the epitome of uninhibited joy and it was so good to see her. She made my shy self feel more at ease. But I think the best part was spending time with my sister, something we need to do more of. She's got a creative side that I hope she explores in the future.

The worst thing was driving back home to Maryland. Talk about a white-knuckled, heart-pounding, "oh crap I'm gonna total the car what was I thinking my dad was right I shoulda stayed home" experience. The juror was snowed in, with no power, and had to jury by slide. Man, what a crazy winter...

Exposed on Saturday

2/3/10

I'm going to do my best to be there, unless the mad crazy snow starts too early. Here are the deets. If you're local, I hope you can drop by.

Faves at Mind, Body, and Spirit @ UMUC

2/1/10

What a wonderful space and reception! It was an honor to be part of this exhibit. My three favorite pieces were Rosemary Feit Covey's Lisa at Twenty-Two with Baby, Tai Hwa Goh's Suspicious Seed 08 - 04, and Marcie Wolf-Hubbard's piece on tar paper, Rock Creek Trees.

You can view the whole exhibition online at the UMUC art site, but seeing this one in person is best so you can really get a sense of the whole, and how paper -- a required element -- is used in so many creative ways.

Opening Sunday @ UMUC

I have a piece in this show - feel free to drop by Sunday! There's also an online exhibit.
