Strokes of Genius @ MFA

6/22/11

A Beautiful Gravity (Falling) was accepted in this Annapolis show.  I usually don't make my text this legible (except the pieces in The Distance Between) but it's a love letter to my husband and I wanted to share it with the world.

Strokes of Genius
July 14 - August 7, 2011
Reception: Sunday, July 24, 3 - 6pm
Maryland Federation of Art

A Beautiful Gravity (Falling)
Acrylic and Charcoal on Canvas
36 x 36 inches
2011

I know what it feels like to fall and I'm falling hard, harder than ever,  and there's nothing
I can do about it, nothing that I want to do but just give in to this beautiful gravity.

Don't Miss...

1/23/11

Jacqui Crocetta, Rachel Rotenberg, and Sonya Lawyer are up at BlackRock Center for the Arts until Saturday, January 29th. It's a wonderful show of wood sculpture, paintings, and fiber collage in a gorgeous space out here in Germantown, MD.

BlackRock is also looking for Montgomery County artists for solos of two months in duration in their upstairs space -- the new Terrace Gallery -- with a deadline of 2/1//11. This new space features one large wall and lots of natural light right off their lounge. It's perfect for two very large paintings. Details here.

Also stopped by Bound last night at Hamiltonian featuring Katherine Mann and Selin Balchi.  Beautiful, lush work not to be missed.

Acceptance: Exposed

1/23/10

Found out today that two of my pieces were accepted in a juried show back in my old stomping grounds, Norfolk, Virginia. I'm really excited about being a part of this for other reasons as well... I enjoyed writing a statement that explored my work in relation to the theme:

The chosen theme is "EXPOSED," meant to explore our common sense of exposure, insecurity, and feelings of vulnerability, stemming from stresses financially, physically, relationally, or spiritually.

And the exhibit is at The Mayer Fine Art Gallery, which is representing some awesome work, with several artists being DC-based. Work was chosen by a selection committee from the show's sponsor, Trinity Presbyterian Church, then Lenny Campello will serve as juror for prizes. I've learned so much about the DC art scene (and more) from following his blog. Oh, and there was no fee to enter and no commission on sales. How cool is that?

When I fix my virus-infected computer, I'll share the statements for the pieces selected. Here's what got in:

10/10/09

Just got word that Into the Woods was accepted for this show! Unfortunately I'll be out of town the during the day when the juror gives a talk. The reception is that same evening, so I'm going to try to make it there for that.

I'm really excited to be included in this show since storytelling is a central theme to most of my work.

1 Happy Woman

9/19/09

Stephen got a piece into the above all-male show juried by a panel of 12 women. His new work is looking great, and I'm really happy for him. The opening is September 26 at the Soundry from 8 to 11 PM.

At the opening, a video of the panel making their decisions will be featured. Man, I can't imagine 12 jurors coming to a final decision in the short turn-around time they gave themselves, but they did it. Stephen will be in Phoenix unfortunately, but Heather and I will go.

I'm also happy because I've been invited to become a part of the Studio Gallery. The jurying-in was Wednesday, and the Director called Thursday to let me know. A big thank you to Artomatic for giving artists the kind of exposure that can make things like this happen!
