New Work: Night Murmurs

7/18/12

A small piece. Small is good for conveying quiet. Like the title implies, it's about those whispers after dark, usually after too many glasses of wine, that you share with someone you love or might want to love. It's about eloquent pauses between your confessions, spaces sometimes filled by the distant hum of outside night noises. It's about those sacred truths laid bare in the cover of darkness and the touches that accompany them. Breath, flesh, bone, and maybe some muffled laughter or even tears.

New Work: Is it May already??

5/14/12

Between travel and a sinus infection, it's a wonder I got anything done this spring, but it's been a productive time. Here's a bunch of the new work. I'll try to circle back and share the background on each piece when I get a chance.

We are all just little birds

New Work: Past Imperfect

2/20/12

Finally got a chance to watch Touch and was delighted since my expectations were high. The intro drew me right in by describing the Chinese proverb which explains that an invisible thread connects people who are destined to meet and have an impact on each other's lives. I'm also digging on Manuel Lima's Visual Complexity: Mapping Patterns of Information. I've also been sewing the kiddo's Girl Scout patches on, which led me to something new that I finished today...

Details

Watched Cave of Forgotten Dreams while my shoulder has been recuperating.  Got chills. Got weepy. This painting is now over our bed, honoring our sleep-time rehashing of our own stories from the day, from our past, for our future. Heather is our only child, the only child from our branch of the family. She's it, no cousins at all. I hope she remembers all our stories when we've left the earth. I regret not knowing what stories of her own she'll be creating when we're gone.

 After You

Acrylic and Charcoal on Canvas

Made for the Studio Gallery member show as part of the citywide 9/11 Arts Project launched by the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery. Stories that grow out of tragedy last a long time, sometimes forever, but some stories from this particular event we can only imagine: The last words of the dying as the planes went down and the towers disintegrated. The unspoken prayers of the grieving. The heroic acts buried in flame and ash. Fragments of over 20 possible stories are documented in this piece about altruism, survivor's guilt, and how life has changed after 9/11.

Evidence of an Unstoppable Heart is specifically for Unseen, the summer upcoming all-members show at Studio Gallery. Self-contained (Breach) will be entered into a local juried show. I usually don't let national or international events influence my work, but In That Soft Green Place is for Caylee Anthony. I had started this piece and was thinking of doing squares in memoriam to echo Berlin's Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, but the Anthony trial ended and I thought about all the small voices silenced by a blanket of earth, the close of a suitcase, or layers of water. Stories ignored by someone who should've asked or helped. Stories swept up in a media frenzy or buried on page 8 by the press. Kids deserve to know love. Caylee deserves to feel peace.

Counting Coup is a definite nod to Miquel Barcelo's La Solitude Organisative. It's about a lot of things: painting oneself into a corner, my stint working at the prison, chaos in the midst of physical or emotional structure... organization that still can't make sense of it all, just attempt to impose some boundaries to contain something wild and unpredictable.

A Beautiful Gravity (Full Tilt) continues the theme of 'beautiful equations' where I reinterpret math formulas into emotions/something I can understand.

Lust... is a new exhibit that will span multiple galleries and showcase works that depict many interpretations of love and lust. The opening reception is Sunday, February 14th, 2010 from 1pm-5pm. This will be an incredible Valentine's Day event for couples, friends, and patrons!

HYATTSVILLE, MD (01-29-10) – artdc Gallery, Design Studio Art Gallery, and Cheryl Edwards Studio will host this exhibit. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2010 from 1-5pm. The exhibit will run from February 8th – March 3rd 2010.

In collaboration with multiple Arts District galleries, we will work to create a movement in celebration of that wonderful time full of love. You know the day--February 14th! V-day. We will be developing a semi-all inclusive show that will be curated in one space, and then split between galleries. This movement goes beyond space limitations and activates the neighborhood through multiple gallery collaborations.

There's an energy which drives us to fall in love. Philosophers, scientists, and artists study it. Lust is an intense craving for one’s lover and has been a tremendous force in the creation of art and spirit. Lust is joyful and painful at the same time. We are exploring lustful creativity with a tremendous, ground-breaking show which crosses individual gallery barriers. As a group, each gallery director will assist in curating the show. We will then divide the work between our spaces. Lust will create a movement for the month of February!

The art will range from publicly accessible art PG-13 to much spicier concepts! This is not an erotic art show. We need to explore this unstoppable whirlwind of fear, need, anxiety, love, and desire. Lust and love move deeper than sex, it's power.
