Artomatic Opening Night

5/30/09
What a blast! So many people, music, art, art, art... The three of us went for a while and I wanted to stay longer but was pretty tired by 10:30. I only got through 4 floors I believe, and I'll be posting links to my favorite artists later on.

If you're planning to go, here's the scoop:

Through July 5th

55 M Street, SE
Washington, DC 20003

Fri-Sat: Noon-1 am
Sun, Wed, Thu: Noon-10 pm

All Done

5/25/09
I feel like I can breathe now -- my wall is done, as is Stephen's and Heather's. Can't wait for Friday!

Chickening Out

Body / Ground

This piece, now up at Artomatic, was to have a small acrylic sheet mounted on it right of center. I had prepped the plexi by sanding to give it a nice surface, then I wrote text on it with white paint and covered that with matte medium. I was going to mount the plexi with screws using metal spacers to keep it about 3/4" off the painting. But I was happy with the painting and drilling into it bothered me, so I left it off. There is some ghostlike text on the left side, midway, but it's very hard to see.

Maybe I'll be braver with the next two pieces I'm tackling.

I'm Up!

5/23/09
In more than one way... My Artomatic wall is done (except for title cards) - yay! Ran into some technical/mechanical glitches but I'll be a smarter cookie next year about these things. Kiddo Foto's wall is finished too. Stephen is almost done and will brave the freight elevator tomorrow or Monday. We got there a little before noon with no real wait, which kinda makes ya wonder about all the untouched walls I saw when I got to our floor. How are these people going to get done?

Also up because I keep listening to that peppy tune "Daylight" by Matt and Kim. Makes me want to smile and dance all day :) It's a free download here, at least for the time being. Have a listen. Dance around. Then go make some art...

Framing

5/22/09
My postcards came in today and I'm in the home stretch with framing. Took a photo of my smallest piece (6 x 6") before I frame it. I had a lot of trouble getting the lighting right. It looks much better in person.

Words He Couldn't Say

Artomatic

5/19/09
Ready or not... here it comes. Artomatic is a very cool DC event. Take 1000 artists, put them in a fairly raw space, make them prep the wall and hang their work and you the viewer can go enjoy.

Heather's photos are up (with a few tweaks needed), and Stephen and I are almost ready to hang our work. My frames came in the other day, got some title cards to prep, and need to finish handpainting my name on my wall. Postcards are at press, and the lights are up.

It's been great doing this as a family/team effort, but 3 times the space and lights, etc. means 3 times the bills. I was really proud of how Heather took responsibility for framing, spackling, trying to paint, arranging her work on the wall, and putting up her vinyl lettering.
